What is an Estate Sale?
An Estate Sale is often described as a glorified garage sale; this couldn’t be further from the truth. A garage sale is full of items that someone no longer wants, an Estate Sale is full of items that the owner can no longer have. The list of items is extensive, but if you look around you right now, we have probably sold it. Cars, Trucks, RVs, Tractors, Bikes, Gold, Silver, Coins, Money, Jewelry, Tools, Collections, Kitchenwares, Clothing, Furniture, Antiques, Hobby items, Military, Lawn and Garden, you name it... we can sell it. An Estate Sale invites the public into the home or business to purchase items at a predetermined price and usually lasts 2-3 days.
Why would assets need to be liquidated? A family member has passed, down-sizing, moving out of state/country, divorce, combining households or going out of business may all be reasons to liquidate items. A Will may be in place that outlines how assets are to be liquidated. A probate court may also have influence on this. We have conducted sales where the family was instructed, by a will, that every sibling was granted one item each, but then had to purchase additional items from a professionally conducted Estate Sale. Then I have had it where no one was allowed any items prior to an Estate Sale, at which time they had to purchase items from the home. It is my understanding that in those instances the proceeds went to the Estate and then distributed according to the will.
